Experience an evening of music from Dark Imagining, the third album by New York composer Jeff Myers. The album drops June 5th on Bright Shiny Things label. Pre-order the album here

In the Drawing Room: A Radical Salon Experience

  • Shine Portrait Studio at Express Newark (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Step into a reimagined salon for the 21st century with an immersive event that blurs the boundaries between performer and audience.

Join ChamberQUEER for a one-night-only transformation of Express Newark’s Drawing Room into a vibrant, inclusive salon space for the 21st century. Inspired by historic “withdrawing rooms” as sites of intimacy, reflection, and intellectual exchange, this immersive event reimagines the classical concert as a radically welcoming gathering. Blurring the boundaries between performer and audience, the evening invites you to move freely, listen deeply, and engage with music in a setting where the art studio meets the comfort and energy of a shared living room. Rooted in the idea of social sculpture, art shaped through collective participation, this is a concert experience where your presence is part of the work.

Featuring Artists:
Danielle Buonaiuto (soprano), Theo Espy (violin), Jules Biber (cello) and Andrea Christie (piano).

The program centers the voices of women and non-binary composers across time, tracing a lineage from the 19th-century salon to today’s evolving “salon culture.” At the heart of the evening is Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio in G minor, Op. 17, a powerful and expressive work that highlights her enduring brilliance. Surrounding this centerpiece are intimate chamber works by composers including Jessie Montgomery, Eve Beglarian, Annika Socolofsky, and Margaret Bonds. Together, these works create a rich, intergenerational dialogue that reclaims and amplifies voices historically excluded from the classical canon.

This performance is part of the Cultural Programming Grant and hosted by Rutgers University-Newark's Department of Arts, Culture and Media, (ACM) and SHINE Portrait Studio @ Express Newark.

Le Petit Salon de Musique presents Rachel Schutz (soprano) and Andrea Christie in recital

  • Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Soprano Rachel Schutz and pianist Andrea Christie join forces for a return performance on the concert series Le Petit Salon de Musique in East Setauket, Long Island. The two will perform a recital focused on the many ways that people’s voices and artistic expressions can be inhibited, excluded, muted, and restricted.

The first half of the program features songs by two female Welsh composers – Morfydd Owen and Grace Williams – almost completely unknown outside of Wales. Despite the high quality of their work, their songs have not made it into the main-stream canon of British music, in part due to still-existing cultural prejudices within the UK. The second half of the program explores other methods of suppression: racism, incarceration, and conflict. Until recently and certainly during their lifetimes, African American composers such as Margaret Bonds did not receive the recognition or performance opportunities that they deserved within the US music industry due to longstanding racism and exclusion. Ethnicity, paired with religion, is also the reason that Abduquadir Jalalidin, a well-known Uyghur poet, is being held in captivity in China. This poem escaped its confinement through oral transmission from prisoner to prisoner, eventually being translated into English by Joshua Freeman and set to music by Thomas Osborne. But countless other works of art and their artists remain trapped. And though he lived for many years after completing his Op. 38 songs, Sergei Rachmaninoff, who was forced to flee his native Russia during the Revolution of 1917, never wrote another song. What had been a prolific career in composition was silenced by his displacement and emigration. If these artists’ voices had been allowed to fully flourish and their works fully welcomed into our canon, our artistic landscape may be even richer.

Tickets in advance and at the door: $20.00 adults/ $15 students with valid I.D./$10 for people 12 yrs old and under.
